Just a simple question - about how much are D sized batteries in your area? Living on the Gulf Coast in hurricane season, it seems like the prices are way up right now, over $1 per battery, even at Sams or on sale. That's nuts!

I'm from Ohio and at Target you can get the cheap Panasonic kinds of batteries (all kinds, from AAA to D) in the clearance bin for a dollar plus tax a pack and that's a dollar for 4AAA/AA, 29v's, 2C's, and I think 2D's. Sorry to hear about your battery woes...

If the prices here are as out of line with the rest of the country as I suspect, I wonder if the Texas Attorney General would consider this a version of price gouging or just a seasonal supply and demand thing. After Katrina and Rita, they beefed up the laws somewhat regarding price gouging in Texas.

Just a reminder, if you find a good bargain on batteries (no matter what cell size), make sure they are not Zinc-carbon "Heavy Duty" batteries. Those things are crap! Alkaline batteries will say "Alkaline" on the packaging and/or batteries.

If there is a Costco anywhere nearby, go there for all ('cept C123's) your battery needs...

You may want to consider stockpiling rechargeable batteries.

A one or two panel solar cell array and associated electronics may give you the ability of maintaining capability without requiring the usage of limited quantity fossil fuels.

The initial cost is higher, but operational longevity is greater than traditional batteries.

I only buy Duracell or Energizer (alkaline) batteries. I've never seen consistent, good performance with any of the other brands or "store brands", with the exception of the Surefire 123s. I guess my shock at the current prices (no pun intended) means that it's been a really long time since I've stocked up on batteries, huh? By the way, welcome to the forums, Flinx. Lots of good info here and we welcome your input and experiences!

how about buying a few adapters to convert AA's to D's? AA's are easier to get.

Some have cheap prices on Eneloops, too.

$26.49 for an Eneloop charger, 8 AA 2000 mAH cells, 4 AAA 800 mAH cells, 2 C size adapters, and 2 D size adapters in a plastic case:

Only select Costco locations have it now, but all are supposed to have them by September 1st.
