It's July, isn't it? Not April 1?

This from the Canadian Press news service:
------------------------------

http://www.cbc.ca/cp/Oddities/070801/K080102AU.html

"WEST VANCOUVER, B.C. (CP) - A man has been found alive after being chained to a tree in the remote woods of West Vancouver, B.C., for six days in what police are calling a bizarre suicide attempt.

Police say hikers looking for their runaway dog Tuesday evening heard the pleas of a man calling for help in a remote area of Cypress Bowl Road.

The 48-year-old man in distress could not be reached because of the rough terrain, although he was able to tell police he had gone there six days ago to commit suicide and had chained himself to a tree.

West Vancouver police launched a rescue operation with the North Shore Search and Rescue Team, as well as fire and ambulance personnel.

The man was conscious when he was reached but rescuers required the assistance of a helicopter to airlift him to safety.

He was later taken to hospital for an assessment, although police say it's believed the man will survive the ordeal."

Think of all the money you've blown on survival gear. All you really need is a chain and a padlock with no key!

Wha.. wait.. he... WHAT?! crazy

Well, that's way more interesting than the article I was gonna post. Just two hikers, lost, but did the right thing and left a plan behind and that saved them.

But, wow.

Hmmm... interesting way to go.

Imagine stumbling on that while out for a walk around! I'm sure the law would have a great time putting that puzzle together.

My dad always told me the only thing you really need to carry is a deck of cards. Start playing solitaire and eventually someone will look over your shoulder and give you a hand.

Why take the hard way, just call Dom Delouise and make an arrangement.

That's the only way he could think of to commit suicide?

Wilderness + tree + handcuffs + bear

Not my suicide combination of choice.

And all WE think about is surviving!

He should have just thrown himself in front of a glacier.

"Bizarre" is the only word for it. Still leaves me shaking my head, though I won't laugh at someone else's misfortune, only thank heaven I'm not in that headspace. The poor, hapless fellow is obviously quite disturbed. Maybe it's best he chose a method with an escape hatch.

The only really interesting part of the story is that he survived with nothing, not even mobility ... rather like someone trapped at the bottom of a ravine in a car (another news story I recall). It gives you insight into the resilience of the human body. Wonder if he drank some rainwater perhaps? Collected dew with a handfull of moss? Wish I had more details.

He had six days to think with little to distract him. Maybe he changed his mind.

"...little to distract him..."

I'll bet that those things that go bump in the night really distracted him. And probably had something to do with changing his mind...

Simply having to hold it, and subsequently not being able to, for six days would have changed my mind. The smell alone had to be torture. Then again, I never would have started that conundrum in the first place.
