The "Gun Free School Zone Law" can impact us all. As we speak, a man hunt is in progress at two schools in Santa Cruz California. Maurice Ainsworth 275# and 6'7" is on the run. Several are hurt so far.

GOOGLE a NEWS search for Maurice Ainsworth for details.

He has a gun. Do you know under what conditions you can also?

Do you know the ACTUAL rules in place with the "Gun Free School Zone Law"? Do you know your state, county and city laws that may come into play?

What exactly does the hunt for Maurice Ainsworth have to do with "Gun Free School Zone Laws"? The only mention of the manhunt that I could find (SF Chronicle, SF Gate) said that a high school and elementary were put in lock down as a precaution, not that he was suspected of being anywhere near a campus.

FWIW schools somewhere are put on precautionary lockdown about once a week in the PNW...

School lockdowns are common here to protect staff and kids. As far as I know all public schools at every level in CA are zero tolerance for guns, drugs, knives, etcetera.

School lock downs are the authorities playing security theater after the fact. I get nervous whenever I enter a wide open Gun Free Zone that is "gun free" merely because the law says so. In the last hundred years in America, the worst mass shootings (plural) have occurred in Killing Zones, sorry, Gun Free Zones. Ironic, isn't it?

Well I guess the logical opposite of 'Gun Free School Zones' would be this;

In real life, the logical opposite of the Virginia Tech massacre would have been it not taking place or the shooter being stopped sooner. A real life example is the Colorado Mass Church case, where a law abiding citizen stopped a would-be gunman.

The massacre at Virginia Tech, a Gun Free Zone, is the deadliest peacetime shooting incident by a single gunman in United States history, on or off a school campus.

Like someone with a plan to kill is going to observe gun-free zone signs?

Not likely.

They're laws created from knee-jerk reactions by people with no common sense.

Most people have a hard time grasping simple logic in these situations and go for the knee-jerk reaction. "Oh my gosh, guns are bad!"

Overlooking the concept that this can only go 1 of 2 ways, either:

A) "Gun Free Zones" work - in which case the ordeals like VA Tech and countless other shootings shouldn't have happened. If there were no guns there, then shootings wouldn't have happened.

or

B) "Gun Free Zones" DON'T WORK and do nothing more than create a target-rich environment for psychos bent on killing innocent people. Seems to be the case so far.

Edit - I replied before reading Susan's reply, which hit the nail on the head for me.
