Every city should do this routinely.

If there's any town that SHOULD do it, it's Malibu. High in fires, low in egress.

If you can afford to live in Malibu, then you send your Major Domo to take the CERT training for you!I would actually rather tend to a Hike in Beautiful Crosscreek Cyn,aprox.300 yds. south of the CERT training classes.Crawdads,Rattlesnakes, frogs,Trout,Bluegill,Nettles,Chickweed,Penny Royal,Mugwort,& lots more,Abound in this Flora/Fauna Treasure trove!

"Malibu" derives from the Chumash language, the group that originally lived in the area. The story is that the word means "don't build here."

It actually translates as something like "place of the thundering surf"- cowabunga!

Now, if the thundering surf, propelled by a tsunami, which was set off by an earthquake, could go ashore and put out the fires, they would have something!

I agree! Every major city has some sort of major threat. The upfront costs of training the willing is offset by having a ready to mobilize volunteer force on the ground when the need arises.

My dept. and city I guess was one of the first to offer cert training. The problem is the folks get "trained" then years pass and nothing happens.... People move lose interest and so on.
Then there is the fact that if something happened I have know idea how I would use a citizen with cert training .

Perhaps the higher ups have a plan IDK.

My CERT has been called out for traffic control during a controlled burn, running shelters for stranded motorists during severe weather, and a simulated exercise to search for lost children. If your FD or EMA doesn't know how to use CERT, CERT won't get used, or won't be used for things we're trained to do. Also, different CERTs have different specialties and train for different things.
