INCIDENTS

Coronado National Memorial (AZ)
Eleven Treated For Africanized Bee Stings

On August 5th, rangers and Border Patrol agents tracked a group of undocumented immigrants up a trail toward Montezuma Peak. The immigrants tried to hide in a tree to avoid being found, but the tree contained a hive of Africanized bees, which are common in Arizona. The bees attacked them, the agents, and the rangers.

One of the agents was stung over 200 times and was unable to see because his eyes swelled shut. A medevac helicopter flew him and an undocumented immigrant who was also stung severely out to a medical facility. A Coronado ranger stood by with epinephrine and assisted in the evacuation of the injured parties.

Search and rescue operations were begun to locate the remaining immigrants, who had fled from the bees and also been stung many times. Nine of them were evacuated and treated for bee stings.

All those who were stung have fully recovered.
