It has been a long uphill struggle - but finally the Canadian government is proceeding to dismantle a piece of legislation born out of hysteria rather than practicality.

The only remaining concern is to ensure the deletion of all records pertaining to the registry from all sources.

The way it should be. I don't even own a gun and I think it's a retarded law.

This new legislation is good, but it's really the smallest of a baby step. Will anybody even notice?

Quote:
Under the proposed reforms, firearms owners will still require a valid firearm licence to purchase or possess firearms and to purchase ammunition. They will also be required to undergo police background checks, pass a firearms safety training course and comply with firearms safe storage and transportation requirements. In addition, individuals will continue to be required to register prohibited and restricted firearms, such as handguns.

Yes, I think this will go a long way in removing a major irritant for people who use long guns for legal, legitimate purposes.

I recognize that our American neighbours have a very different perspective on this type of issue. However, most Canadians support (or are at least willing to put up with) these other measures for the general good. Different strokes for different folks.

This thread is already on "thin ice." Let's not descend into politics.

These are still rational items regardless of anyone's political stripes.

Practically, probably not (in my opinion at least). I understand it has caused some added inconvenience to firearm purchases, but long arm registration really provides no additional barriers to legal firearm ownership; it just creates some additional paperwork and provides a centralized database of who owns which firearms.

As the your quote states, the real barriers to ownership come from the PAL (Possession and Acquisition Licence) process which remains in place. It's for this reason that some have been suggesting the current government take a step beyond simply removing the registry by replacing the PAL with something more like the old FAC (Firearm Acquisition Certificate) process.

I should add this is all second hand information for me as I am not a firearm owner.
