Can someone please confirm this for me -- I just heard from a video blogger - Nut'n'Fancy, that survival expert Ron Hood passed away a day or two ago. I knew Ron was battling cancer for several months but didn't know where he was at. If so, then the survival world has lost a great resource and good person. RIP.

I understand he and Karen have a young son as per his videos but I don't know much about their personal side.

I do know that he was very knowledgeable and studied survival techniques thoroughly in the classroom and most importantly in the field. For example - he debunked the practicality of using a still (pit dug in the ground and clear sheet with a stone set in the middle) to gather water. The energy and water expired required to build one far outweighed the amount of water gathered from such a devise so he didn't recommend it in a survival situation. I have most of his videos -- his techniques are suited to many different environments but are most suited to his native Idaho. For northern boreal forests, I defer to Mors Korchanski.

I lost my dad when I was 8.

Though I know very little of him, my thoughts go out to his family and friends.

I've had the pleasure of Ron's company several times, both out in the woods and in Las Vegas. He was one amazing, irreplaceable fellow and he will be very, very missed by me and the rest of the Blast-clan. DD1 burst into tears when she heard he had passed as they had bonded tightly over eating bugs together.

His woodsmaster videos are a must-watch for anyone who wants to learn how to survive in the woods. Just a thought, if you buy them now you are going to help support his widow and son.

That's too bad. Really a creative and genuine guy. I never met him in person, but spoke to him by email. That was quite a few years ago. But he would always take the time to answer. And his thoughts were always based on solid experience. Hard to replace a unique guy like that!!
