i'd go with high performance synthetic. dries faster, maintains shape better(ie. won't stretch out and ride up into a bunch). i prefer jockey sport midway.

If there is any significant chance you might get close to fire or extreme radiant heat I would avoid all or mostly synthetic underwear unless it is one of the few synthetics that won't melt onto and into the skin. In the 70s the military had a number of cases where people were involved in fires and their nylon or polyester underwear melted into their flesh and made the burns much worse.
Exposed to extreme heat natural fibers char and insulate instead of melting like many synthetics. Synthetics in a 50/50 or better blend with a natural fiber is generally okay because the synthetics tend to bond to the natural fibers instead of the skin.
This may or may not be a major issue but it is something to keep in mind.

A lot might depend on the season. In hot weather, cotton cools, in winter it kills. Sometimes, in hot humid climates, going commando is the way to go...
Capilene is cool in hot weather, warm in cold. I wear it exclusively as my undergarments all year round. There are several weights of the material, I prefer the lightest and wear 1, 2, or three in layers depending upon conditions and gives a great comfort range.
Like OBG mentions, cotton can kill. And it certainly gets clammy in sweaty weather.

Merino wool is the best, if you can afford it/willing to pay for it. Not itchy, doesn't smell (wool is naturally anti-microbial), keeps you warm when wet... super comfortable.
I swear by merino wool.
