How would you disinfect flu infected area? What preventive methods can use to prevent similar outbreak?

The best way to prevent the spread of disease (colds, flu and the creeping crud) is to wash your hands! Ever notice that the good doctor washes his/her hands before and after they examine you? The article quotes the fecal/oral route for transmision of this type of virus. So, wash your hands after using the bathroom. Wash your hands whenever you have the chance and I bet you will notice a decline in the number of sick days you have. In general you can disinfect any hard surface just by normal cleaning. Lysol is good because all you really need to do is wet the area and let it dry. Staying healthy is really pretty easy.

Along with washing your hands, don't cough into them either, not even with a hanky or kleenex- cough into your elbow. Doesn't prevent you from getting if they are slobs, but you are less likely to share while setting a good example.

And don't pick your teeth, nose or ears, or rub your eyes if you don't know how clean your hands are.

Good point, forgot about the coughing bit.
So Kiddies, if you want to pick your nose wear your latex/nitrile gloves!

With quite a bit of travel I've learned to keep the antibacterial handy-wipes around. If you spend a lot of time in hotel rooms, take a wipe or two and hit the stuff that has likely been handled a lot: TV remote control, phone, door handles, light switches, sink handles, toilet handles, etc. (Of course, be sure to hit the toilet handle LAST not first!)

Ditto on the frequent hand-washing. Also keep a bottle of Purell hand sanitizer around for when you're not close to a sink.

I can honestly say (knock on wood) that all of these steps work.

Oh Matt26, you naive Amish Boy. If it were only true!

http://www.hygenius.com/history.htm

"It seems reasonable to assume that hospitals have come closest to responding to this problem. Modern surgery, after all, has long since solved many of the early problems of infection. However, fundamental problems of hygiene still exist. In 1992, The New England Journal of Medicine reported on a hand-washing study in an intensive-care unit. Despite special education and monitored observation, hand-washing rates were as low as 30% and never went above 48%!"

Sorry, maybe I should have added that if the good Doc doesn't wash the hands first, they get asked to before they touch me or my children. I must say that while I am prepared to require this of my medical profesionals, I have never had to.
If any of you move to the Burlington VT area and need a great pediatrics practice give me a shout.

It's been a looonnnngggg time since I've been called naive, Thanks
