I bought one of those waterproof match containers recently - the cylinders with the flint striker on the bottom. I decided to take Ranger Rick's advice and forget the matches, just cram it full of cotton balls instead.

I also added a ferrocerium rod from Hood's Woods (as a backup, just in case the flint striker on the base comes loose), and I'm looking for a small piece of metal suitable for use as a striker.

But I was wondering - is there anything else I should put in it? Bear in mind that there's very limited space, so I'd like to restrict it to stuff that needs to be kept dry. Maybe just some Aspirin tablets?

We'll forgive you.Personally I would stick in a few fish hooks and maybe a good sewing needle or two. These items would be hard to fabricate in a survival situation.

I second the sewing needle. I generally carry 2, small and larger, both with a length of waxed suitable thread wound around it. The wax keeps it wound up amongst my matches.

A good scraper can be fashioned from a hacksaw blade.
