I'm very sorry for this woman. It seems a knife or a pair of scissors might have saved her.

I can't recall her name, but was not a silent movie star strangled by her scarf while riding in a convertible some years ago.....?

This story apparently hasn't hit the Cdn. news yet.

There are a lot of mechanical movers in malls everywhere, and at certain times there's nobody around to help you.

This is a freak accident; but it's a lousy way to die. My sympathy to the family.

Doug: It is on the Globe and Mail and I also had seen it on other CDN news sites.

You know there is a bylaw in Montreal that you can get charged for having any sort of knives other than SAK on you, at the discretion of the cop, some sort of anti-gang law they dreamed up.

Strangled by scarf tangled in escalator actually happens a lot more often than you'd think, google it.

My sympathy to the family.

I have always find scarfs a bit scary...? I'm a bit obsessed by entanglement hazards, so things attached to me are either short or brake away.

What a terrible event. My heart goes out to all affected. I gotta admit I'm also a bit leery of scarves for the same reason I don't care for ties- a bit too much like a noose for my tastes. If someone wants to hang me I'm gonna at least insist they bring their own rope; I will not provide it!

Yikes--as a previous poster said, what a lousy way to die. Certainly something to be mindful of if wearing a scarf--make sure it's not dangling too far.

There is a trendy way of wearing a scarf -- essentially double it and put the two loose ends through the doubled up middle. Your neck is in a noose and once it starts to tighten you can't get out of it. Just one more reason to carry a knife...

I just bought a Smartwool scarf and when I tried it out a friend mentioned the trendy method. Not going to happen... Weather isn't cold enough here for a scarf. Maybe next year in PNW... smile
