Hi,

Just ran across a Free Backpacker GPS Trails Lite App on Backpacker.com (Direct Link) for both Android an iPhone

Interesting little app. You "create a trip", then either set waypoints and/or turn on automatic tracking. I took a walk around the yard setting waypoints then was able to navigate my way back.

You can save your trips and revisit them. Also, you can pick a waypoint you saved and "GOTO" it. It also allows you to capture and save audio and pictures along the way.

Free version comes with both Topo and Google style maps.

I wouldn't replace my Garmin ETrex Legend, but for redundancy (one is none, etc.) I liked it, especially since my phone is always with me. I did NOT get the upgraded paid version ($4.99 - ouch - a little much for a smartphone App IMHO), but the free app will serve as a back-up for me.

Upgraded version notes indicate it will allow you to save off-line maps (stored on your phone, obviously), Record Video, display position in UTM (D, DM and DMS is the format in the free version) and save the data in NAD27 format (WGS84 is the format in the free version).

The app also allows you to upload info/waypoints, etc. about your trips to Backpacer.com and Facebook (if you're into that sort of thing).

Most of my hiking is confined to local parks and such, never too far off the beaten path - not much in the way of woods left in central Ohio, mostly all the flat terrain was converted to farm land years ago - so the on-line maps work for me. My supposition is that if you would be using this app in an area without cell/data coverage, you would need the paid version, since it lets you store the maps locally.

So, again, thought it was a nice little app to have for free and thought some of you might be interested, especially given some of the recent GPS map postings.

I'm no expert in all of this so if anyone else wants to review this and provide their opinion, it would certainly be welcome.

Regards,

Buckeye
