Yes, honey was given for a cough a lot when I was a kid. Growing up in rural NFLD times were often tough, and money for medicine scarce. Home remedies were normal(like putting bread on a cut to draw out an infection) Some of these home remedies I still use today with my kid. If honey was not available, then a heaping spoonful of blackstrap molasses was often just as effective, although a lot harder to get down. I can't speak for everyone, but I always thought it to be effective.

Pediatricians advise against use of honey in kids <12 months old due to risk of botulism. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/infant-botulism/HQ00854

I seem to remember my mom, when I had a bad cough as a kid, mixing honey with some pretty good bourbon and having me sip on it. Seemed to help. Or maybe I just didn't care about the coughing anymore...

I think bourbon was just a "cure all." I remember it being used on the gums of teething babies to reduce pain. grin

You can also put honey on wounds and burns. Oh and you can eat it too!
