The Oct. 2009 issue of Popular Mechanics is now in stores. It is devoted to topics such as surviving disasters, urban homesteading, backyard chickens, going off the grid, etc... Most of the articles just skim the topic. It's good for someone just starting out but most of us may find it a bit thin.

One particular article is most excellent though: The Rules of Survival by John Galvin.
