After a massive rescue Search in the Glen Clova and Loch Brandy area, the body of a Royal Marine Commando has been found after going missing in poor weather the day before. Apparently the conditions for the 20 year old Commando proved to be deadly for the well known walk/run around Loch Brandy.
It would seem not being prepared for the poor wet and windy weather once again proved to be tragic. Conditions were reported overnight at 80 mph wind gust speeds and temperatures of -11 C

This is the view of the area. As can be seen, the route is not the most difficult grade for the hill.

It seems (correct me if I am wrong) that he simply went for a run and got caught in horrible conditions. A very tragic story and result.

Thoughts:
1. Always check the weather forecast, even for short trips.
2. Always have a "plan B."
3. Never totally trust the weather forecast.

With the help of wind chill calculator in the link above I get the result that it was down to -40 degrees celcius with wind chill factor. No wonder it was too cold even for a well trained commando if he wasn´t dressed warm enough.

He was wearing shorts and a 'T' shirt.

I cant imagine what he was thinking of, or exactly what happened to delay him, perhaps an injury. I will be interested to read the report of the inquest.

We have not had -11ºC temperatures anywhere in the UK yet this year, nightly minimum there more like +2ºC, so I suspect that quoted temperature is the calculated wind-chill temperature.

Sad story

Regardless what he thought of the weather, carrying an ultralight pack with essentials isn't a bad idea.

Even for the excercise itself, the added weight of the small pack helps increase excercise effectiveness.
