I was looking at my lighting supplies this morning, and wondered,
"how can I cook with this?"

I googled this morning, and found someone with a similar idea on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-6qlEZJaxc

I like his approach- I picked up 2 of the Coghlan's tea light candles for 4.00 each (they appear to be on sale at Camping Survival for 3.65- not my site, not money to me)

I was wondering if anyopne has tried this, either hit alcohol stove, or with wetfire/weber cubes?

I was planning on leaving glass in, but removing a portion of the top to improve heat flow.

With alcohol, I'd be careful with the glass. The heat from HEET may be such that your glass will shatter.

I'll tell you what does work very well- 8 hour liquid paraffin cells. These are the exact same diameter as the little tea light candles that those lanterns are made to run on, but they burn 8 hours or so. I've never seen one leak (they're pretty tightly capped) and unlike a regular candle they can be snuffed and relit as many times as you like so long as there's still fuel. As a chef I've used them for decades in restaurants- they're the candles used in the little lamps on your table.

In my experience they work great in the UCO Mini lantern. They work great as a light source and there's no wax to spill. Liquid paraffin is another term for a refined type of kerosene. As an added bonus, they work great as a firestarter. It's easy to light the wick and they burn long enough to get about anything going.

good idea. Do they put out any more/less heat?

I don't have a way to measure but the heat output is pretty comparable. And I haven't tried them in the Coghlan's lamp, just the UCO.

I very much doubt they can produce enough heat. Once I sat a cup of tea on top of my UCO mini to see how it would work, and the tea light kept the bottom of the cup warm, that's about it.

"Enough heat?" For what? I used mine for light, and as a secondary fire starter. For me, heat isn't a good thing for a light. If you mean not enough to cook then I agree, it's not. UCO doesn't advertise the Mini as a stove, just a lantern.
