After being introduced to a better way to sharpen knives from my
old Scoutmaster who is now my son's Scoutmaster, I looked around
to find a small stone I could take in the field for touch ups.
I have one from the hardware store, a diamond hone that I pulled
the plastic back off and now have one that fits in an Altoids or
wallet and weighs just .4 ounces. Does a reasonable job of re-
sharpening. What do others use?

That's a pretty good idea there. Thanks. Have to check that out.

For field sharpening, I've gotten the best results from the DMT Diafold sharpeners. I guess I'd call it my fave. Lotta folks like the diamond grit sharpener sold by Fallkniven.

I've used a Spyderco Sharpmaker for for a few years now. Its super easy to use, keeps the grind angle very well, and gets my blades mighty mighty sharp.

Diamond is outstanding for field use. It will abrade (notch or smooth) any hard material, so it often becomes a problem solver for things other than sharpening.

When weight becomes an issue, I have used both DMT and EZLap diamond stones, which come mounted on a plastic slab. These are monocrystalline diamond, which lasts a LOT longer than the Chinese polycrystalline ones (the latter are perfectly fine for occasional use). I tend to go with a medium grit for its versatility, even though it creates a coarser edge.

In everyday use, the diamond file on the WaveII is the go-to tool. It is an excellent thing to have at hand. (And the uninitiated are always impressed when you whip out a chunk of "industrial diamond" and solve the problem on the spot.)

+ 1 one the diamond stones. I find no other type of sharpener will even touch the steel of my Fallkniven(s)

I still prefer a full sized sharpener, but I could see where gluing a small one such as this to the side of the sheath could come in handy in a pinch.

That IS a great idea. I'm an Assistant Scoutmaster, can't wait to share it with my troop. Thanks for sharing!
