I just purchased two Dorcy LED Glow sticks one blue one green (Havent played with green) and they seem kinda cheap. I got um for 3$ when the lifegear ones are I think around 6 or so in store. The Blue Dorcy Seems brighter then the blue lifegear and states it has a runtime of 200 hours. The lifegear I believe boasts the same But doesnt state anything about how the flashlight portion effects the runtime and that they can be used at the same time most likely cutting it in half.

Forgot to mention that The Dorcy doesnt have replaceable battery capability when the lifeguards do.

Anyone else come across these Dorcy ones or purchased um?

I can tell you that a 5 year old can break one in 8 minutes.

If you swing it by the lanyard, it can be broken into 6 pieces when if hits a corner.

As a side note- 5 and 6 year olds are AWESOME gear testers, if gear can survive them it can survive almost anything

My middle daughter's nickname at the age of 3 and 4 was Destructo. Honestly, using her to test gear then wasn't fair to the gear.

Welcome to ETS!

Bought the Dorcy lights for long term light - I think it might take a dremel tool to make the batteries replaceable. On the other hand, for $3...

Bought them, like them. Lighter and cheaper than my Krill lamp, I don't think they are as robust or water tight as the Krill or GloToob. That being said, I've got two in my truck, one in my EDC and a few scattered about in my gear as they are about a one-to-one volume and mass replacement for a chemlight (which I still carry in the vehicle and in my evac gear) for a lot more light. If I really need to keep one water proof, zip locks, packing tape, or a condom all work for a while.

Fact of the matter is the basic bend and shake chem lights suck and are massively overpriced. I wouldn't buy one costing more than $1 yet most sell for $1.50 to $2. (BTW Walmart sells 2 for $2 in the camping section & is the cheapest i ever find)

So even the cheapest battery powered chem light is better unless its for a completely disposable reason like keeping a bunch of kids occupied. I use Krill chem lights, they are battery powered and the green and white are super bright. I use the red as a night light in hotels, the Green 180 degree extreme for everything else. The standard 360 degree green is about the same electroluminesence as a Timex watch backlight though with a much much larger panel. The 180 is brighter than that.

I get the real Cyulume Snaplight ones from ebay for under a buck, shipped. I'll have to look up the vendor.

In our area several of the dollar store carry chem lights.
While they are not the best brand in the world, if you can find the jumbo ones, they last quite a while- I had a pair last over 48 hours.

BTW, did you know a 2 year old can chew through a chem lite.

and the liquid keeps glowing in your carpet for several days?

Sigh.

Chem lights have that retro chic though. Last time I saw anyone break out a chem light was on the KLF Last Train to Trancentral, where the Shamen Phorever People were under the influence of Ebenezer Good. grin
