Howdy All,

I found this while surfing the 'net this morning. I thought it was a pretty interesting article. I don't live in the city per se, but I'm fairly close to a good sized one. When my wife and I are out for an evening walk, I always keep my eyes open for the edibles. Some are clearly on private property but others are not. I've found a pear tree, mulberry tree, walnuts, and all kinds of edible "weeds".

What a surprise to see an old friend of mine, Chauncey "Hookin' and cookin'" Nizol, quoted. We both worked at the same Scout camp a "few" years back!

In the city where I am now there are a lot of apple trees. People often want them cut down because they dont want to take care of them or pick up the fallen apples.
There are hedge plantings of Nanking cherry too. Nanking cherry is like a bush, but it produces a cherry that is like a small Bing cherry. They were planted for their flowers. Most people don't recognize therm as cherries, but they are very good and are easy to pick.
I think if a person talked to the owners of many of these apple trees they might have a nice little business going and picking them cleanly instead of the owners spending months raking up fallen apples.
I do not recommend tapping the cities maple trees for syrup, the parks people get just a bit touchy about having holes drilled in their trees.
