This is interesting (albeit expensive and relatively new technology):

Summary: The HydroPak claims to replace batteries and generators with replaceable cartridges that can sit on the shelf indefinitely, and can later be activated with water for about 12 hours of power. Silent operation and no emissions so they could run indoors. Each $20 dry cartridge cranks out about 400 Watts through an AC outlet and two USB ports. Of course, for this pioneering technology you would have to pay $400.

Here is a copy of the press release from the company (in .pdf):

It is interesting technology, however on a per watt basis, it is extremely expensive. At only 400 watts, this product will have very limited uses.

Also, the company is only announcing a pre-production model so I would like to see how the company and it's products are faring in a couple of years..

Agreed on all points. Like all new technology, it should become more affordable and more accessible as the years pass.

Not really new technology. We were playing with Edison cells back in the 70s and getting similar results. Even when using distilled water the plates fouled, so I understand the cartridge idea.

If those cells are using atmosphere as the reactant, then they will produce Nitrous oxide as well as water, which is a pollutant.

Slowly we are creeping forward into alternative energy replacements for $99 a barrel petroleum.

New technology only insofar as it utilizes a cartridge and very portable self-contained unit.

Of course, if it is producing a pollutant (nitrous oxide) then that would be directly at odds with the zero emissions statement. Unless, the company is attempting to be clever and basing that statement on the fact that any pollutants are sealed in the cartridge and not being immediately released. Hmmm.

Yep, if they aren't making NOX, then they are using canned O2, which would raise my neck hairs a bit.

I think the biggest draw is the shelf life. It can sit for years and still fire up perfectly first time.

Hi bmo,

Voller Energy in the UK already have commercial products available but are still very expensive.

The Voller Emerald 5kVA Fuel cell LPG generator is a very interesting development.
