I think that this was partially debunked by Snopes.com. IIRC the corpse is not that of a bear attack victim, but rather somebody that died some other way and was then eaten by various critters.

Edit: here's the link. It is still a big ol' bear though.

Martin, this 'news' has been floating around sometime. It is hardly a record bear and the story has been debunked. For one thing, unloading several 7MM magnum rounds at close range into the skull would hardly leave much to photograph, let alone prepare for trophy mounting. A 7mm for deer will be a 139-154 grain bullet, hardly sufficient at any velocity to break a bear charge. You would need minimum, the 174 grain roundnose. This sort of sensationalism angers me. It just adds to the 'killer bear' drooling saliva image that sells magazines, 7Mm BARs and the relentless pushing of bears to extinction.

One thing for sure, assumng that part of the story is correct, taking a .38spl along for bear protection is a joke. Morebetter you use if on yourself than an Alaskan brown bear...

The first time I saw it was about 2-3 years ago. It seems that it just won't go away.

I'll admit that is very possible. However, I hold out hope that even the embellished story might just remind people that bears are unpredictable carnivores. They are not the fluffy pets that Treadwell and his ilk make them out to be, but rather magnificent wild animals worthy of respect. This might be better for bears in the long run. Because when stupid humans die, then the bears are killed too. <img src="/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
