I spent some time this weekend practicing my firemaking skills. In the process I used my BCB wire saw for the first time. I was impressed with what a great job it did. I was able to saw through 3"-4" hardwood logs with little effort. This was definitely easier and faster than chopping through the same wood with the BK&T CU-7 knife. It would be even easier if you mounted the saw to an appropriately sized flexible stick to make a bow saw.

I suspect that over time the sharp "nibs" on the wire saw would get dull, and I don't see how you could re-sharpen it. I suggest that you get 2 or 3 of these saws (they're cheap) so you can train with one and always have a fresh, sharp one in your "for real" kit.

How are the split rings on the hands? I often thought if I needed to use mine that I'd make some loops out of 550 cord to wrap around my wrists.

BCB discontinued split rings in favour of web loops.

Best Glide Aviation Supply imports both types of BCB saws: with rings and with web loops. My saw is the ring type but long ago I removed the rings and replaced them with finger loops made from 550 cord. When I cut those 3"-4" logs, I only had my middle finger in the loop and it was quite comfortable (although I was wearing leather work gloves). If you like you can put small sticks thru the little 550 loops to form handles. Having small 550 loops only big enough for a gloved finger or a stick minimizes the bulk of the overall package.
