Anyone have any other biting fly repellent other than what I use (Sawyer Broad Spectrum)? Looking for other options DEET don't work for me.

I've only recently (this spring) started using Permethrin based treatments for clothing. The company you mentioned, Sawyer, makes a spray for clothing that is supposed to last through several washings. I have found it to be pretty good against the dreaded mosquito so far this spring. No ticks so far either. You still need something for exposed skin, but, if your clothes are all treated, it seems to help a lot.

I've also had good luck with Ben's 100 (which is 95% deet). Might melt plastic, be careful around some synthetics... A lot of Army/Navy stores will sell "military" insect repellent, but, I haven't found it to be any better than things like the heavy duty versions of Cutters or Off.

Your mileage may vary.

Anyone remember the Monty Python skit where they are trying to kill the mosquito with a military fighter plane? They fire missiles at the thing, then drop a bomb on it, and then, before they approach it...they fire a few rounds from their sidearm and say "must be sure it's dead, there's nothing worse than a wounded mosquito"

Anybody tried one of these used by the military? I was wondering whether to buy some or not:

Bugband, the new patented Geraniol based biting insect repellant that has proven to outperform both Citronella and Deet. Looks like Fido's been cheated out of his flea collar for use on your wrist.

Burt's Bees has an all-natural repellent using Eucalyptus and Lemongrass oil. I've only used it a couple of times now and it seems to work, but still to early to know how effective. One thing's for sure...I smell much prettier!

Look for something called Green Ban 2000. It's a cocktail of plant extracts from Australia. I've had really good luck with it, but it doesn't seem to do much with ticks. I recommend using that, and parimethium on your boots and gloves.

Every time anyone has claimed to beat DEET it turns out to be a baseless claim. I have worked in the health food and outdoor businesses most of my life and have received samples from everyone. Even the latest; Picaridin lasted less than 60 minutes, anything natural (citronella, lemon eucalyptus etc.) last mere minutes.
If you are in real bug country with swarms of mosquitoes then a minimum of 30% DEET is the only thing that will keep working. I like Ultrathon 33% the most and when it is really bad any 100% DEET product is the only way to go.

I too have found that the Picardin only lasts about an hour, in fact I tried it yesterday afternoon.
