I've just read the publications section of the website. As usual it is excellent and impartial. in the section on true survival stories there are some great books mentioned. One glaring omission, however, is a book called 'Touching the Void' by Joe Simpson (see Amazon).

Joe Simpson, and his climbing partner, Simon Yates, attempt to climb a difficult peak in the Peruvian Andes. Near the summit, tragedy struck when Joe fell down a small cliff, breaking his right leg in several places. When Simon reached him, they both knew that the chances of getting Joe down alive were extremely grim. Nevertheless, they fashioned a ridiculous plan to do just that. The next few hours were spent trying to lower Joe down the mountain in the teeth of a blizzard.
Several thousand feet down, Joe, who was still roped to Simon, lowered over an edge and found himself hanging in space. The edge was over hung above him. The dark outline of a crevasse lay about a hundred feet directly below him.
Joe could not get up and his weight began to pull Simon off his belay. To save himself, Simon was finally forced to do the only thing he could do under the circumstances - cut the rope.
What happens next to Joe after his fall into the crevasse is beyond belief.
Touching the Void is an amazing book. It forces you to reflect on the strength of the human spirit when the will to survive is it's only resource.

Its been out a while but if you haven't read it give it a try. You won't be sorry.
