There is an abundant literature and utube videos related to different aspects of survival. What are some of your favorites, preferably with pointers that you have employed successfully.

I favor written literature, rather than the unregulated world of utube but there is good stuff there, if you are careful. An oldie that still has useful material is The Survival Book, 1959, by Allen, Pond, and Nesbitt - lots of real world examples, many from WWII, and much relevant data, but lacking in recent tech developments, like GPS.

I started reading annual editions of Accidents in north American Mountaineering, American Alpine Club, when I started climbing in college - lots of fruitful stories there - and all true.

There are good solid primers by authors like Raymond Mears and Larry Dean Olson, and don't forget this website right here - lots of info that will keep you out of trouble.

What eelse is out there which you have found useful??

I think many of us know Laurence Gonzales' works, so I don't need to mention it. If you haven't heard of him, he's worth checking out.

I also enjoy reading about expeditions -- climbing mountains, diving deep into a cave, etc. Take for example, Philip Finch's Diving into Darkness: A True Story of Death and Survival. But that's not the same as what I prepare for.

One thing that us urban survivors can do is pay attention to the objective facts in the news when a disaster strikes. Does it suddenly turn into a Mad Max world? Do people survive by hunting? How quickly does government aid show up?

An excellent source! Now in its 9th edition, first published in 1960, it gave me a lot of good pointers, buying the 1st edition in 1962. Although concentrating on mountaineering, much within the volume is good advice for anyone using the outdoors.

It is interesting to compare volumes and realize how techniques and attitudes have evolved over the years.....
