Is there any particular permanent marker best suited in a survival situation? I'm looking at MARKS A LOT, which has a larger tip, and Sharpie, which has a fine tip.

The first task is to write the expiration dates on the side of boxes to easily and quickly identify the boxes that need to be used first/next.

I tend to use Edding markers for some tasks. The body is made from aluminum. As long as you do not hit the cap they dent but do not break. They are available in different sizes and tip shapes. They write on most surfaces even on slightly oily surfaces or whiteboards.
They even have one where the writing is only visible in UV light.

I have experienced indelible ink fading noticeably in some situations. I doubt that the particular brand is of any difference. My practice when I am dealing with important material is to put a backup label inside the container. For this purpose, a good #2 carpenter's pencil can't be beat....
