Here is a large collection of PLB success stories at ACR's website. There are plenty of lessons to be learned or reinforced. Some of the stories reveal mistakes made, and some (IMO) didn't really justify PLB use. But then maybe not all the pertinent info is there, and not everyone is a meticulous narrator. A few include web links to news reports of their ordeals.

As with the AAC's "Accidents in North American Mountaineering" there is value in studying the misfortunes of others.

Disclosure: I have no affiliation with ACR, though I do carry their Res-Q-Link PLB. I happened across this page at their site while getting info on replacing my PLB's battery.

Nice find. Definitely some interesting and instructive tales. It would be interesting to see full accounts and analysis of some situations where PLBs did not work, like the recent story of the hiker in the White Mts. One would not expert ACR to highlight those, however....

Definitely a nice find. The story from Mr Andrev Mallinov in Auckland, NZ is who you want to be when you need to activate -- saving someone else. "It will never happen to me", but it may happen to someone else...

It looks like Mr. Mallinov did everything right.

This account on the ACR page describes a PLB performance pretty much like the White Mtn hiker: his PLB's coordinates were off and varying during the rescue effort, making rescuers think he was moving. However the PLB's overall alerting function was enough to get rescuers on scene.

During the night the Personal Locater Beacon provided rescuers additional repeated signals indicating my correct position on the ridge so that the following morning rescuers knew my probable location to focus rescue operations."

I would submit that given the rocky, mountainous terrain and extreme cold, the PLB in the recent White Mountains case did a pretty good job.
