Ahh, the things you find when you have 10 minutes to kill on the internet.

I found a website devoted to low tech solutions.

This article on Oven Stoves was intriguing; I like how it covered both advantages and disadvantages; very evenhanded.
I bring it up, as it seems A) very green B) very durable C) run forever with no outside help.

I do not have one, I do not not sell them, I make no money from this....

Very interesting. I was just at a conference in Basel and sat next to a floor-to-ceiling oven stove (no longer used) and was wondering how it was utilized. It was very stylized like some in this article. Thanks for the link!

I'm still waiting for the backpacking version to come out. grin

I kid, I kid. Low Tech magazine is always very interesting and mind-opening (it's been mentioned here before).

The oven stove is a very old and effective concept, using high temperature burns and massive thermal storage. Modern designs are based on the rocket stove / rocket mass heater concept (which you can build yourself).

I'm actually interested in building one of these rocket mass heaters as the basis of a greenhouse. That is, you don't put a stove in the greenhouse, you put a greenhouse around the stove. Given the endless supply of scrap wood and trimmings from my property, and clay for the digging, it seems logical. I would like to mod it to have an oven space for baking bread (or pizza), which would be uber-cool (and tasty too).

One of my former clients has a log home which makes mine look like a shack. He had a huge soapstone fireplace installed at a price which made me widen my eyes. But it radiates heat for hours after the wood has turned to coals. Truly a wonderful source of heat.
