I am surprised they drank seawater and survived !

In some areas near some islands, sweet water seeps from the rocks and mixes with seawater. I wonder if it has been the case in this situation, and has diluted seawater to near drinkable limits.

They were delighted to discover she was a descendant of Tontaake's uncle Bairo who was lost at sea from Marakei in the 1950s, landed at Namdrik and stayed, marrying into the community.

'Now we know what happened to my uncle,' said Tontaake.

lol. Maybe it's genetic.

Danged lucky. Great argument for a signal mirror and a PLB. Thanks for the post.

As fishermen, I'm sure these guys knew the risks of drinking seawater. I picture these fishermen as guys who go out in some very small boat, so I'm sure they have experienced the challenges of having enough drinking water while out to sea. You can drink a certain amount of seawater before it becomes toxic and they probably had the discipline to drink just a small amount. I'm sure it wasn't pleasant.
