Headline: "School trip becomes survival course for stranded Alberta students"

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/nati...article1707901/

This story has all the classics: GPS sends busload of students down an abandoned logging road. Fortunately there's a happy ending. It's just one more example of why kids should carry a bit of gear and know how to use it.

now why wern't my school outings that much fun?

my favorite quote:

“After we had to chop down one tree, hold up other trees and make a bridge out of rocks, we started thinking this might not be the right road,” Mr. James said.

YA-THINK????

I'm glad everyone came out of the experience alright.

How many times have we heard this or something similar:

"...decided to follow an alternate route suggested by their satellite navigation system."

I wonder if it would be better to omit logging and fire roads at least as far as suggested routes in consumer satellite navigation systems. It seems to get a lot of people into trouble.

The town of Bamfield is only accessible by logging road..Iirc, there are 3 different routes in and this was obviously not the best for a bus...

The navigation device people use doesn't know the difference. Once you get rural enough the maps are not that accurate. Every road around my parents is a county route with a number, sometimes paved, sometimes not paved sometimes a narrow dirt path through some trees. The data simply isn't there to tell if county route 12 is paved or a log road.

It was mildly reminiscent of the James Kim incident, but in better weather. Both situations: if you have to rebuild the road, this is NOT the road you want to take!
