Eddie Bauer zipper pull with LED light, compass, and thermometer. I bought it from Target thinking it was just a re-branded Coast one like I have on the zipper of my SHTF bag. The compass and thermometer fell out of it after only carrying it on my keychain for 2 whole days. My Coast one has served me well so far with no problems.

Ditto.

I'm pretty leery of 98% of Coleman products too - their propane-powered stuff being the exception.

Most of the EB gear is junk. As in manufactured with cut-rate materials, assembled by low-wage workers, and given nearly no quality control.

I bought my friend and brother their "survival" bottle (nalgene knock-off) and the contents are pretty mostly worthless except the bottle and one or two of the items (I got them at a steep discount as stocking stuffer type presents). :-)

That's the only time I can recall buying anything from EB that wasn't made of cloth or leather.

"zipper pull with LED light, compass, and thermometer"

You had a clue when you saw that list.

Generally, the more features you add to an item, the more diverse those features, and the cheaper they sell it, the lower the quality and durability will be.

Swiss Army Knives (SAKs)s are a fair example. Comparing a single-blade folder to a SAK of equal cost usually shows the folder to be superior as a knife. The SAK usually gets a break because all the 'blades' are made of similar materials and go through similar manufacturing processes. Everything is made by the same company, often in the same plant. So the mechanism benefits from this in fit, finish and general quality.

Lately I have seen SAKs showing up with LED flashlights, the occasional compass and sometimes even a thumb drive. As much as these seem like useful items as diversity of materials and features widens so does the chances that mistakes will get made and missed in the QA process. Demand that the product sell cheap and your just begging for unreliability and low quality.

Actually, the one I have from Coast seems to be pretty well-made. It's shaped exactly like that one, has the same features, but it's black. I have a better compass and flashlight inside my SHTF bag, but I keep that one on the zipper on the outside just in case I need to have a light handy without having to get the better light out from inside the bag.

Check those little compasses. Many are 10, 20, even 45-degrees off.
