I've only recently (this spring) started using Permethrin based treatments for clothing. The company you mentioned, Sawyer, makes a spray for clothing that is supposed to last through several washings. I have found it to be pretty good against the dreaded mosquito so far this spring. No ticks so far either. You still need something for exposed skin, but, if your clothes are all treated, it seems to help a lot.
I've also had good luck with Ben's 100 (which is 95% deet). Might melt plastic, be careful around some synthetics... A lot of Army/Navy stores will sell "military" insect repellent, but, I haven't found it to be any better than things like the heavy duty versions of Cutters or Off.
Your mileage may vary.
Anyone remember the Monty Python skit where they are trying to kill the mosquito with a military fighter plane? They fire missiles at the thing, then drop a bomb on it, and then, before they approach it...they fire a few rounds from their sidearm and say "must be sure it's dead, there's nothing worse than a wounded mosquito"
