I am assuming you are certified. But that being said I would always dive with a buddy next to you. There are a lot of things that can go wrong even in shallow water and shore dives. You still may become entangled, injured, or swept away in a current. Take a buddy you trust, and stay together, have a signal devece that can be seen from the shore or a boat You may also want to do a few dives with a local instructor or group to familarize youself with the area you will be diving in. I personally would never dive in a new area without first diving the area with a qualified local to familarize myself with the area and risks specific to the area (unless I had to make the dive for some reason).

Hi gunsmith

I'll second what Tomswango mentioned take a buddy, but also tell someone else when and where your going and when you'll be back. Better still have someone stay on the beach waiting for you, if only to carry your gear when you come back. At least should the unfortunate happen someone will know when and where.
I always carry a pony on my rig.
If you never dived the site before check with local dive shops/schools, they may give for some vital info on where not to dive and where's best to dive and when. Check out tide times as well. Diving off the French Coast, Normandy tides play a crucial role in when you can and when you shouldn't dive. I don't know the area your diving, but like anywhere new, I'd check with the locals first.
Dive safe, surface sound.
