I have noticed several people include twist ties in kits. I ran across something interesting that has me putting some in my PSK.

I found H.S. Archery Accessories - Mag Limb Lights (clearance sale at Walmart). Made by Hunter's Specialties.

http://www.hunterspec.com

These are 4.5 inch by .25 inch twist ties. They look about like what you use to tie trash bags, a wire in the center covered by flat strips of plastic.

The difference is that the plastic is a reflective tape. The idea is to twist these around limbs to mark trails to find or leave a blind in the dark. They come in red and white. (They are called "Limb Lights", but they are just reflectors.)

Did a quick night-time field test (make that yard test). Hung a couple in a tree that was partially obscured by brush. Backed off over 50 yards with a regular 2-D cell flashlight. They were very easy to spot. Hung one on the mail box on dark street. They really shine in car headlights.

They are plastic covered wire. An hour soak in a glass of water had no effect.

Oh, by the way, they work just fine as twist ties, too.

Bad news is they are $4 for 36, unless you can find on clearance sale.

Hehe... I almost posted about these, but didn't think anyone would care. For what it's worth, I got a bunch on clearance as well. The packs I got were half silver, half orange-red - I assume the same you tested.

I hadn't tested outside yet, but in even decent ambient light they didn't show up so well using a decent flashlight.

I also picked up the thumbtack style reflectors... Those seem less useful since the others can be used as twist ties.

Kind of an interesting idea. You could make your own with some reflective tape and light guage wire. Custom lengths or just make up a small roll for the BOB.

In daylight, I would not even notice that the red ones were anything other than a twist tie. It is not until you put them out at a little distance in the dark and hit them with a light that you really appreciate them. To me, at least in my limited test, the white ones seemed to stand out a little more than the red ones at night. Might be different with different light sources or backgrounds.

I think they would work well for their intended purpose, finding your way to and from a deer stand in the dark.

My thoughts were that if you are going to put twist ties in a kit, why not use ones that are multi-function?

If you found yourself walking down a dark road at night in dark clothes, a few of these tied to your jacket might help keep you from becoming a hood ornament.

Lost in the woods at night you find a good spot with some natural shelter. You need to wander out to find some dry fire wood. Tie a couple to a limb to help you return to base.

Or, maybe you just need a twist tie or a little bit of small wire to make a repair.

I've seen siliar reflectors for hunters to find thier way. I include a couple of meters of neon flagging tape( non-reflective, tho) in a SAK for the same reason.

I agree on all counts, and that's why I bought them. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
