Here's an interesting link from my online travels:

Disaster Preparedness Kit checklist

Cole Hardware is located in San Francisco, where they "are aware of the necessity of being prepared for natural disasters."

They're also aware of marketing. :-) Two comments. If people think they're going to haul a supply can around, give that another thought. It's a big garbage can. It's part of the grab and stay inventory. I have a grab and stay kit myself (I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I have no hope of being able to evacuate).

Second, if you keep your can outside, be _sure_ it's UV proof, heat proof, and weather proof. We kept a plastic storage bench on our patio, which faced south. For whatever reason the lid warped - heat, UV, whatever - and no longer sealed. So we ended up with rainwater, frogs, spiders, and hosts of insects in our stuff. Either get a really good container that can stand up to the rigors of whatever the weather is in whatever area anyone lives in or get crap cheap enough to toss when it warps and replace it regularly.

Also might be a good idea for stuff stored outside (or heck, inside for that matter) to "double bag". Over design, security in depth, mutually reinforcing layers, no single point of failure, distributed redundancy, etc.
