In the S.A.S. survival guide the author lists a beta light as part of his kit. Anybody know if these are available here ( U.S. ) and how much??

While I can't remember the company name, I did see the Beta Light manufacturer at the 2001 SHOT Show. The lady in the booth said they were LE/Mil only but that they might also sell them to people with SAR bonafides. They did have some non-restricted trititum markers on hand though.

Even if you could get them here, it seems pretty darn expensive !

I'd just use a photon 2 for $10 instead of forking out $70-$80 for one of these puppies.

If you really NEED to go tactical, you could use one of these "covert" photons in green.

You could also use one of these mini chemlites.

Still a lot less cheaper.

You guys have misinterpreted what Wiseman was talking about in his handbook.

The betalight he was refering to was not the "betalight torch" you guys are talking about at 50-100 pounds ( http://www.edirectory.co.uk/penrith_surv...mp;companyid=55 ), but a small item of fishing tackle, about the size of a matchstick, guaranteed usually for ten years, available in several brightnesses and colours, and costing less than 8 pounds sterling, from almost any tackle shop in the UK. They are used for marking floats, rod tips, bite alarms and other bite indicators.

Those small tritium tackle markers are a nice bit of kit.

Unfortunatley, it is difficult to get tritium products here in the United States. They say it is illegal, but I don't know that for certain.

We have similar fishing rod markers in the US, but they are chemlite based, similar to the mini-chemlites I posted above. These should be easily found at any tackle shop as well.

The obvious disadvantage is that once activated, the chemlite is only good for a few hours, then its done. The betalights are good for about 10 years.

I have a Photon 2 in my PSK. I feel that it is a lot more versitile for my anticipated needs than a mini-chemlite or betalight.
