I'm not Italian, but according to the UK press, it was caused by a tree falling on a power cable in the Swiss Alps.... all of mainland Italy was out.

Isn't this the forth major power cut world-wide in the last two months?

Yes as I count it that makes 4. All in western, "democratic", secular, first-world states. All were "known" to be "not the work of terrorists" as proclaimed by the respective govts within minutes of the outage starting even though months later they still don't know for sure what did cause them.

Hmmmm.......

Further conclusions are left as an exercise for the reader.

Lets see.
1. There were a major power-out in major part of south Sweden last week (dont know if that counts),
2. Italy
3. In huge power-out in the US a couple of weeks ago.
4. ??? Were was this then?

Well, this at least tells us that we should keep supplies handy in case of power failure.

England was also affected.
During the summer they anounced that there could be major power cuts in Germany if the temperatures stay high. So I doubt that itīs true that major blackouts couldnīt happen here.
As they keep telling that major blackouts will not happen here, I decided to kick my preparation efforts up at least one notch.

Yep I wa scounting the Sweden/ Denmark one. The forth was London - a third of London went out, including the tube. Used to be that the tube had its own power station to prevent this, but now it runs off the National Grid like everything else - apparently yht grid is more reliable! Thats a combination of privitisation and lack of investment for you! <img src="images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />
