I have posted the first installment of the SHOT Show 2002 review. First installment covers multi-purpose tools and knives from most of the majors. Now I have to get some sleep and then go get some real (as in earning money) work done, then I'll finish it of with the rest of the knives, flashlights and other cool stuff I stumbled upon.

http://www.equipped.org/shot_show_2002.htm

Enjoy!

In re: Victorinox WorkChamp

I learned about them a few months ago. I really wanted to see one, so I found a source in Europe willing to ship them here.

The WorkChamp is very impressive. Typical Victorinox quality. It weighs 7 oz. and is 4 3/8 in. long by 1 1/8 in. wide by 1 3/16 in. deep. That's my main problem with it. I'm used to carrying a SAK Ranger everyday, which is 3 1/2 by 7/8 by 15/16 and 4.5 oz. It's just a bit too big for me as a daily carry knife.

Basically, think of the WorkChamp as a Ranger on steroids with a locking blade and pliers. The pliers are rather small, and not as functional as, say, a Gerber Legend's. All of the tools open smoothly, and are finished well. The main blade is 3 3/16 in. long as opposed to a regular SAK's 2 3/8 in. Otherwise, it's classic Victorinox. It also has a wonderful wood saw, an adequate metal saw/file, good scissors, the typical bottle opener/lg. flatblade screwdriver and excellent can opener/sm. flatblade screwdriver. Rounding out the features are a reamer/awl with sewing eye, toothpick, tweezers, and corkscrew with an innovative eyeglass screwdriver twisted into it. You needn't buy a whole new SAK to get this neat little screwdriver. Just go to your favorite SAK website, find the "Parts" section, and they're available, usually $2-3.

I really like the WorkChamp and would rely upon it. It's just that I was looking for a daily carry knife/tool, and it's a bit big for my comfort, and probably wouldn't be carried everyday. So the search for something to replace my 15 year old Ranger continues, perhaps in vain. Maybe we're just too used to each other. And the WorkChamp will be hitting Ebay on Thursday, to free up some of the funds in what my wife calls "Peanut's Toy Budget".
