im a low budget man and don't have much to spend, but I will soon be splashing out on a reduced Leatherman Wave. I've also seen the Mora Training Knife from woodlore. Woodlore are an exelent company. The knife is only £7.36 ($11.50) which seems to be a fantastic price. Do you think I should purchase it?

Pete, That is a very good price. Does it include your VAT? Most people eventually acquire a more robust knife for wilderness use. Wilderness writer/instructor Mors Kochanski in Canada also uses these blades. I use scandinavian knives and always have a few moras or puukkos disbursed in my gear. A fallkniven became my core blade. Never think that low budget means low quality. These are one example of inexpensive gear that works ;O)

Chris,

Which Fallkniven model do you own? I've been seriously considering the S1 & A1 and haven't made up my mind yet. Any opinions on the two?

John McIntire

John, I have the forest knife. The A1 is a bit large for my taste, but a well balanced unit. Falkniven has recently introduced the A2 with a laminated blade. Falkniven offers different sheaths and the satin steel or black finish. The Moran or convex edge scared me at first. Once you actually have to sharpen a Falkniven it is not that difficult. Peter, the CEO will answer any questions you may have personally. These are sharp knives that are also pry bars. I broke the tack welds on a wrought iron fence ( legit emergency). I believe the falks tested @ approx. 427 lbs side force to snap vs. 250 for some similar choppers of like size. Lastly, there are a few good online dealers who offer significant discounts. I think you will like any model ;O)

i'm in the same finational situation as you are pete, and i had probably the same doubts about the quality and funtionality of such a cheap knife, i was wrong, the mora knife offered by ray mears is an outstanding knife for the price. i've had mine for about 6 months and have stopped saving up for more expensive knife. the mora knife is, in my, opinion almost idealy suited to most bushcraft/survival tasks and has the added bonus that being so cheap you're not that bothered about damaging or losing it and so end up finding yourself using it for things that you wouldn't dare use use a more expensive knife for. i haven't managed to damage mine yet, which is surprising cos i'm a bit heavy handed at times but if i did i wouldn't be particularly upset cos for less than a tenner even i can afford to buy a new one every six months.
my advice would be to not worry about whether or not to buy one of these knifes, go out and buy two, you won't be dissapointed.
and just in case you're wondering, no i don't get a commision on sales!

take it easy

stuart

I don't know if this would be a problem for you but the mora knife dosn't have a full tang. and uses a plastic handle.

Most of the big online dealers carry the smaller version. It's a nice knife for the money. Just remember the entire knife is proportionately smaller, including the handle. You can get them stamped USMC or USA.

Would you take the fallkniven S1 over the Ka-Bar?

Chris: How do your contrast a fallkniven S1 with a Mora?

The K-bar is a combination fighting knife and utility/survival tool. There are three makers; Camillus, which created the design ( from an even older established outdoor pattern), Ontario, which got the bulk of the contracts, and K-ar, which got the glory. The leather handle and sheath is subject to the elements and the knife has been known to snap at the hilt under severe stress or even simply being dropped ( usually well used units.) Fallknivens are pretty well bullet proof. I use Fallknivens. My experience with "K-Bars" and Marines has always been pleasant, with only one exception, and that wasn't the knife If you buy one, get the Camillus or K-Bar. They have better edge geometry and tangs.
