Thanks Tom,
That was pretty much what I was planning on. I read on Blade Forums that a guy used JB Weld on a replacement handle for a Mora and it was rock solid.

Yup, that should work ok. Another little tip - to make peening the tang easier, heat the very tip of the tang to red hot on a gas stove or with a propane burner, then let cool in the air. It will anneal the metal and make it more malleable. Just be careful not to overheat the blade (it would ruin the temper). Wrapping the blade in a wet rag will do the trick.

Annealing the tang might not be necessary but it's still a good idea. Since the tang was peened once already the steel might be work hardened to the point that it won't deform under the hammer easily any more. And if you continue to hammer it cold regardless, the stresses might build up and the tang could snap. Has happened before, not a pretty sight. wink

Using the old google, I found this website on the venerable Mora:

http://www.oldjimbo.com/survival/mora.html

He talks about why he likes the thing, and most importantly how the handle is attached. Pretty simple but it gets the job done.

The Ray Mears programme where he makes a (very attractive) handle for a rat tail knife is the Swedish one in the 'Ray Mears Bushcraft' series.

I would not even bother doing that. If it seems loose or
needs to be "sealed" I would use JB Weld (good for wood and
metal). Or, use clear Epoxy to seal it: cleaner and nicer,
but not so strong. Your knife/blade is not super strong, so
keep it, and use it for what it is.
(I like Moras and have some like yours.)

If you look on ragweedforge.com (highly regarded & specializes
in Scandi blades and knives), they have a Blade Page.
These blades are cheaper than knives, and many (most?) are
stronger than your blade. Put a handle on one of
these blades, and it will be a much better knife, than
your present one.

There are 3 knife forums. Scandinavian knives and blades
are generally highly regarded on all 3. They have fix-it,
make-it, or shop-work types of sub-forums.

1) knifeforums.com
They also have a Scandinavian forum.
2) bladeforums.com
3) britishblades.com

Good luck on whatever you decide.
