As to not being able to make fire, he had the tools there all the time!! The problem was that he just limited himself to friction fire lighting.

As per article:

Les Stroud was giving him advice/consulting.

He signed up for a survival course with John McPherson who was Strouds teacher. Course lasted 5 days.

Also he said that he was a scuba master and vivid outdoor sportsman.
