If you are looking for hurricane/earthquake/camping supplies but don't have a lot of money check out your local resale "junk" shops. Today in one nearby I saw:

Three Coleman double-burner stoves
One Coleman propane lantern
One 27-peice camp cookware set (unopened)
Two Boy Scout-style mess kits
Three antique, hand-cranked sewing machines
Assorted work boots
A bunch of sleeping bags (mostly crap + one army bag)
Solar/dynamo radio-flashlight
Assorted hand tools (wrenchs, pliers, hammers, etc...)
Assorted fishing gear
Three Thermos bottles
Campfire grill
Books on gardening
Books on sewing and mending clothing

Our yard sales are crap, as are most of the second-hand shops here. I can't wait to get to a larger town with a little more selection. Practically everything outside of groceries are mail-order frown

Probably spoiled since I grew up in SoCal!

Don't forget "Craigslist", lots of good finds there.I've gotten lots of cool stuff off it. All you have to do is use the search option in the for sale section.Use keywords such as, camping, hunting & outdoors.

I've seen the same trends in junk shops.

I blame the internet and more specifically ebay. Nowadays a lot of the shop owners look up absolutely everything that crosses their doors on sites like ebay to see what they could possibly get if the auction goes perfectly.

People also scour junk shops looking for things to sell on ebay and the shop owners are aware of it.

Really, in these instances, about the best thing you can do is try and haggle the price down.

If the seller brings up ebay prices, tell them that they're not going to get as many people that want the item walking through the door as would see it on ebay. If they then say that they might as well list it on ebay, tell them that they should.

These people also have to pay rent, electricity and so on, may look for a quick sale and may be more willing to haggle than you might think.
