the post about the LDS and their canning kitchens got
me thinking about this Spam can problem again..i may
have run this by in another post sometime ago but i'll
take another swing at it..does anyone have any idea where
one could buy empty Spam type cans??i have tryed EBay
and the Hormel company has cans but they are gift shop
type things..banks and such..and i don't want a entire
run of cans that would fill a truck..i idea is of course
to fill the can with survival gear and seal it..a Spam
can is about the right size to be carryed around in a
day pack or jacket pocket and when open could be used
as a cooking pot and sealed and weatherproof it would
keep one from being tempted to open it for a small item
you should have with you anyway..matches..energy bars..
i have thought about using just a normal can..like beans
or fruit come in but the oval shape of a Spam can seems
like it would carry better...paint stores carry empty
press lid cans but the size and shape are not right..
the old Storm Kits in the tire patch cans were perfect
but metal tire patch cans are long gone and the ones found
on Ebay are approching the "junk" stage now that they
are so old and rusty at best..

Great idea, but sorry, I have no idea where/how you could do it...

GarlyDog...good link..i had a look at them via Google awhile
back and they did not have the screw top tins then..i would
prefer a can that seals without having to use tape..a pop
top or even the older key style would provide an air and
watertight seal..

Funny you should mention Spam cans. I have constructed several cook kits with these cans. They are the right size to fit in a pocket, are very durable and when fitted with a handle make an excellent container for heating water. Though awkward to describe, my Spam can kit has one can emptied and thoroughly cleaned with a small hole drilled at one edge which accepts a threaded screw that is glued into the drilled out end of a four inch wooden dowel. This turns the Spam can into a small pot with a handle. Another Spam can has both the top and bottom removed and a vertical cut made along the seam. This pops open to provide a wind break for the esbit or trioxane that will heat the "pot". A few holes drilled into the windbreak aid combustion. A few more holes drilled at the top edge of the windbreak allow insertion of two small steel rods that serve as supports for the pot. For storage, I wrap the windbreak can around the pot, unscrew the handle and drop it into the pot with the two small rods, slip it into a plastic bag and put it in my pocket or day pack. The can also holds several heat tabs, a lighter and tea bags/instant coffee. I apologize for hijacking the thread, but I have had a lot of fun with Spam cans over the winter. It was a long winter...

CANOEDOGS:

Some time back on this fourm there was a post about a Spam container that you use when you had not used all the spam for lunch. My understanding was you droped the open can in the Spam Saver and closed the lid.. That might solve your problem, I have tryed to get one here in lower Calif. but have not found one yet. They are sold in the same section as the spam.

I've made PSK's out of SPAM and sardine cans. I use a can opener that cuts the side of the can and not the top, thus leaving the pull tab intact. Fill the can(s) with whaterver you want and expoxy or JB weld the tops back on. They seem to be waterproof and pretty durable. The only problem is if you put something in that needs rotating, you have to pull the tab.

I guess that's a small price to pay for another SPAM and sardine dinner.

Not a source for spam cans, but

http://www.freundcontainer.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_211EZO_A_EASY%2DOPEN+ENDS+%28ALUMINUM%29+FOR+CANS

here is a source for easy open tops for round cans. Of course the problem is you have to have a can sealer.

I would think you would have to have a special sealer to handle a can that is not round. Even if you found the cans and lids, I don't know if a regular can sealer would work.

It has been a long time since I have had any, but someone may know, how is General Foods International Coffees (A sweet, flavored instant stuff) packaged now. They once came in a tin about Spam shape, maybe a little smaller, with a press in lid.
