While on a firetrail hike today, we rescued a Golden Retriever suffering a badly lacerated foreleg, raw footpads and severe dehydration. A cellphone secured a DVM and Park Service truck. I rigged a simple shelter from the 100+temperature with my poncho, paracord and hiking staffs. I silenced all funny comments about german flektar ponchos in California drought weather. It also occured to me there is now a complete and ready set of cord for the next impromptu shelter. I merely tied it all off on the grommets. A few minutes saved next time if nothing else!

Ray Mears (and team) does the same with his hoochie. A bit of attention so that the whole thing is folded right and it packs away to nothing. When you want to use it, unfold it, tie it between trees, corners tied to pegs and it's done. The knots used on the main cord round the trees are easy to untie with one pull, he learned them from the evenque people in Siberia so putting up and talking down the shelter is very quick, just what you need in bad weather.

Justin
