Do you guys wash your hands frequently? The recent study by UK medical council found that men are notorious for failing to wash their hands after using the washroom. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6647137.stm

Up at elk camp, I would fill a 5 gallon insulated water cooler with hot water and add a little bleach. Any time someone needed to clean up, they would use the cooler and if I needed to clean a utensil up real quick I could use it as well.
Like I've said before, no one ever got sick in any of my camps.

The funny thing is your urine is basically the same chemical makeup as sweat but no one ever washes their hands after wiping sweat, I read a study once that said a computer keyboard has more germs than a public toilet, all that stuff that gets under your nails gets on the keys.

IMO, if wash them too often your immune system will weaken with time. I'm considering the potential threat as a sort of general vaccination, but for free Just use the common sense when washing of your hands is a must (like after visiting clinic and before eating).

As the old joke about the sailor and the Marine goes, my momma taught me not to pee on my hands. And I flush with my foot.
I worry more about the handles on shopping carts at a supermarket. Thank God some stores not provide wetwipes, to you can clean those things...

Interesting question! Since having a splenectomy to treat an immume system problem, I've developed a new awareness about possible sources of infection. In additional to normal hygiene practices, I am especially careful to wash after shaking hands and touching anything that might be a possible source of infection. I hope you've also recieved your pneumococcal vaccine!

The first thing I do everytime I come back from outside is washing my hands and I follow the other general guidelines and since I've been doing that, I've never been seriously sick and it must have been about three years now. I think you can not wash your hands too often, as long as you don't use antibacterial soap. Just regular soap. From the College of American Pathologists : Antibacterial products may cause long-term problems. Because they kill weaker strains of bacteria, stronger, more resistant germs can flourish.

That statement has more holes in it that a block of swiss cheese on a rifle range. No evidence to support it- you still get exposed to germs, but not in the numbers. An uncompromised immune system doesn't roll over and die before a few score of something, you need a LOT of it. So if you've killed 90% of the germs, your body can smack the other 10% around if they get through your skin and then it will remember what that germ looked like in case it's kin come a calling. (Jeez, that sounds redneck.) Use of the antibacterials making germs tougher DOES have evidence; that's why I have plain old Ivory. The lye will kill enough.

Its not the act of washing, its washing with all the anti-bacteria soap. I remember that study being on the news, all the anti-bacteria soap kills the good bacteria and prevents you from building up resistance to the bad.

Actually antibacterial soap is good for one time emergency use and it's not a bad idea to include this item in a survival kit. But for an EDS (everyday soap) it's better to use regular soap.

Does ivory make your hand skin softer like a baby?

It's just as important to wash them correctly - long enough (whistle a chorus of Yankee Doodle, which takes about 20 seconds), and in as hot water as you can take, and on the backs and between the fingers.

I agree, except for the hot water. You don't have to scald yourself. Hot enough water to kill the bacteria would also harm your skin. The idea is to lather well so that the bacteria are dissolved then washed away by the running water, not really killed.
And another thing to not overlook is to change regularly dish towels and hand towels and launder them in hot water and bleach (that will kill the germs).
