While browsing around at Galyan's this weekend, I found something great to consolidate EDC items. It's called a Marsupial Pouch. The pouch is about 2.5"x"4.5", is made of black nylon packcloth, and features one zippered compartment, one slit pocket, and a split ring and spring-clip on a short webbing band. I found I can place the following items inside the zippered pouch alone:

MEDICAL
-2 small rectangular adhesive bandages
-2 mini rectangular adhesive bandages
-1 antiseptic wipe
-2 650 mg. acetaminophen caplets
SEWING/REPAIR
-1 large, 1 small sewing needle
-2 yards ea. dark gray thread, tan thread
-1 threader
-1 medium, 1 small safety pin
-1 medium brown, 1 small clear button
-1 large, 1 small paper clip
-1 yard thin twine
-1 small roll duct tape
MISC
-1 Bic butane mini lighter
-1 Brunton 9068 watchband compass
-1 one-inch pencil
-2 business cards (doubles as writing paper)
-1 Listerine PocketPak
-1 tube lip balm
-1 cough drop

A comb slips nicely into the slit pocket.

On the keyring, I have (in addition to a house key and 2 car keys):
-aluminum whistle (pencil diameter)
-Princeton Tec Pulsar II LED micro light, blue

I'm also carrying the usual wallet, coins, generic SAK (Leatherman Micra is on the wish list!), bandana, and cell phone.

I feel pretty equipped for everyday needs, which involve tending to toddler cuts and scrapes, trimming loose threads off clothing, calling to see if I need to pick up milk, and illuminating dark parking lots. I do keep another kit stocked with more wilderness-oriented supplies when hiking, backpacking, or even going to more remote areas by car, that includes the following:

-Sparklite firestarter kit (striker & flint, 8 pieces Tinder Quik)
-Bic butane mini lighter, 1 box waterproof/windproof matches
-Starflash 2"x3" unbreakable signal mirror
-Fox 40 classic whistle (115 Decibel rating)
-Suunto Clipper compass w/luminous ratcheting bezel & wrist strap
-Petzl Zipka LED headlamp w/ 3 extra AAA batteries
-pocketknife
-Potable Aqua water purification tablets
-aluminized polyethylene emergency blanket
-large garbage bag
-wire saw (use split rings from keychain)

I also have an "airline-friendly" first-aid kit that fits in an Altoids "mini" tin, since I do a lot of traveling on commercial flights, that contains the usual items.

So far, the "modular" approach really works well for me. Any thoughts?
