Yesterday our local water utility left a notice in our front door saying that due to some sort of maintenance on a water main our water "might" be off today from 11:00AM-5:00PM.
OK no big deal. My Darling Bride read the notice after I did and was pretty freaked out. "How are we going to make it without water?", she asked. I could see an almost panic striken look in her eyes.
No let me describe our situation: Both my Darling Bride and I will be home all day (on vacation this week) with our dog. We have no children living at home.
I quickly went through a mental checklist:
a) plenty of drinking water stored in garage...check
b) 4 10Gal water containers filled and stored in garage...check
I assured DB that we would be fine and even brought a case of water in from the garage and put it in the fridge. "What about the toilets?" she asked. Brought in a 10Gal water jug from garage and explained to her we could use that for flushing.

A questions she always asks me:
"Why do you have all that stuff in the garage?"

She just doesn't get it.

Maybe you should get a Ken & Barbie doll and use them to act out a scenario about the water being cut off but Ken, who wisely prepares for such occurrances, has saved the day with the supplies he had stored in the garage. MAYBE, she'll get it then.

My wife and I just went through the same thing (the water didn't get cut-off), and her attitude was "oh well" because she knows what we have stored and she does get it. (she use to play with 2 Barbie dolls and named our oldest daughter after one of them; no,,,it was a different name than "Barbie", thank-God)

My wife (Jane) always asks me (Tarzan) "Why do you have all that "stuff" stored in the garage." My reply " Ug! Tarzan see trouble, make fire with rock, know where water stored, feed family, protect Jane." (thumps chest) Jane to Tarzan "I wish you would start putting your loin cloth in the cloths hamper." Tarzan hangs head and slinks off to garage to work on bug out bag. grin

I came home one day and my sister is in a panic: the water was turned off before she got out of bed. Now it was 2:30 p.m.

"So, did you get out the stored water?"

"Oh... I forgot we had it."

Sigh.

Geezez Wildman, you ever get hit in the head with a Barbie doll? Don't patronize your wife like that unless you enjoy pain!!!

I gave up trying to explain such things to the wife a long time ago. Fortunately, she quit asking those kind of dumb questions about the same time. She still asks all sorts of other dumb questions, though. Hey never a dull moment, right?

If we lost water at the house, it'd be a whole lot easier just to take the family out to a hotel for a day or two rather than listen to them all [censored] that they gotta use a jug or a bucket.

Funny, but they don't seem to have such concerns when we are out on the trail. I guess it is a context thingy.

Out of curiousity, how often and how do you replace your stored water with fresh? I am assuming the drinking water is bottled water, and while I've never had a bottle of sealed spring or purified water go bad on me, I've been assured it can happen. How about the water in the 10 gal. containers - do you replace that from titme to time?

I have been hit in the head by Barbie dolls, by my daughters and with extreme prejudice, once. It wasn't near as bad as being shot in the head. "Dain Bramage" is bad but not as bad as how it warps your sense of humour.

Well, I can tell you a barbie doll launched out of a skeet machine will leave one heckuva welt, and take you off your feet if hit in the chin with it...

I don't ever wanna be shot in the head, though. I look silly enough now as it is.

I watched the movie "Ice Harvest" again last night. I tell ya, Randy Quaid and I gotta be related. Dang that is a funny movie.

The drinking water is bottled water, I buy it when I see a good sale. Usually I keep it for around a year.
As for stored water I usually replace it every few months. the stored water is used to water the garden when I replentish.
