Does anyone have a means of controlling a brown recluse infection. I read about burnt motor oil keeping the infected area under control, but don't have any experience. A very good reason to have a Sawyer Extractor handy. Pulling some of the venom out would probably help if done quickly.

Hunter

I'm no med expert by any means, but I have no idea how motor oil would help. There's many different "treatments". If possible, of course, go see a doctor! Everyone reccomends a cleaning, an ice pack, and elevation.

This guy reccomends a nitro patch. (some of the followig pics are not for the weak at heart.)

http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Forest/2021/recluse/intro.html

This site refutes it:

http://www.emedicine.com/emerg/topic547.htm

And this site even has a forum, looks pretty interesting:

http://www.brownreclusespider.net/

I've got a nice scar from moderate necrosis from a cuddly little brown recluse. I don't think a sawyer extractor would've done too much for me. It took a few days for me to really notice any significatn pain or swelling. Not to mention the severe reactions that some people have to the bites as well. JMHO

Unfortunately most bites are not noticed until symptoms arise. My 2 year old was bitten about 3 months ago, and she did not start complaining until about 36 hours after we think she was bitten. Quick trip to the doctor and some strong antibotics, knocked it out pretty quickly.

Based on what little I researched after she was bitten, and searching all the old wives tells I've collected over the years, I do not think there is a way outside of traditional medical circles to keep bites under control.
