Hi,

I have been looking into getting a wireless weather station for about two years now. I think they are a bit expensive so have been a somewhat slow to act. I've been able to see the Davis Vantage Pro (not the newer one) and the Oregon Scientific (WMR968). I also read about a few others but have not seen them up close, such as the LaCrosse line.

From what I read, there seem to be a lot of mix reviews about the Oregon Scientific. Davis seem to get overwhelmingly favorable reviews. They are usually available on e-Bay at some savings, but I've never bought from an e-Bay vendor and am a bit hesitant.

It's a subject I've really been interested in and would like one where I could log the data and publish it to a local web site. I know most have software (usually optional) to help do this.

Just wondering if anyone in the group has one, has experience with one and could perhaps offer some thoughts, recommendations, thing to watch out for, etc.

I have been using a wired Davis system for 7 years. I tried wireless, but was not impressed.

It may be just my location that makes it difficult, but I had problems with batteries wearing out in the coldest part of the winter.

For me, wireless was only convenient for setup. I went back to a wired setup.

Weather Underground - www.wunderground.com This is a free service that allows you to store your long-term weather logs online. Very cool for watching trends...

BTW, I have had only good experiences on e-bay. I have purchased at least 80 different items without any problem. Just make sure you read the descriptions of what you are buying completely and carefully. Sometimes items that look like bargains are broken and being sold for parts.

GarlyDog, that is exceptionally freakin' cool. I've messed with wundergrounds weather icons on sites here and there but haven't delved into their full set of tools. Nice! Looks like most of your page is using tools/links from wunderground. What parts are piped in from your own local weatherstation? Checked out wunderground's links (http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation) and it looks interesting. I'll have to look closer.

We installed an Oregon Scientific wireless at a ranch. Seems to work well, now we just have to make sure all the other folks can figure it out.

Someday I may go back and pretty it up some more, but it works fine the way it is....

All the maps come from outside sources. They are just links to images. Right click to get the source link, and you can put it on your site too!

The meters: temperature, humidity, etc., come from our weather station through Virtual Weather Station software.

I have had two Oregon Scientific "weather stations" (simple clocks with indoor/outdoor temp readings). In both the outdoor sensor died within about six months. Tried contacting the company, a replacement sensor cost more than I paid for the entire unit originally, and were out of stock. Oregon Scientific will get no more of my money...

I'll look more closely at the wired set-ups. What software package(s) do you use with it?

OBG, thaks for the OS report. Seems like their issues extend to their other models too.
