Welcome to the best site on the net!
I like the AMK kits very much, but I add items to them. Also, if you're going to grab n go with an AMK kit, buy a water proof stuff sack to keep it in. The OR or Sea to Summit bags are just the ticket. I use a paint pen to put a couple of large white + on the bags after the extended kit is in the bag so it is easy to identify (if you use a light colored bag, maybe a red + would be more visible).
The Atwater Carey kits are good, too, and Campmor has their own version of them at respectable prices - often on sale. Same deal - stick in a water proof stuff sack (the type with a roll closure). They also need additional items.
Regards,
Tom

Welcome to the forum Start with basics: first aid, shelter, water and food. Then add items from other categories, such as: tools (knife), paracord, hygiene, and sanitation. 1. First aid kit should have enough supplies for all the members in your party including pets. 2. All of your members should be able to protect themselves from cold and rain. 3. Have some water and some means of making more water (filter, or purification tablets, and a container) 4. At least some food never hurts
